2020 • Confinement, Stagnation, and the Introvert's Dilemma
The pandemic year brought a profound period of isolation and uncertainty. Confined to my room with no television, I spent endless hours on my laptop, obsessively designing and redesigning the Klineduo homepage. The inability to fully implement my vision due to the website builder's paywall filled me with anguish. I felt entirely stagnant. To keep from drowning in my own thoughts, I relied on manual chores around the house during the day to stay grounded. Time and again, I considered pitching the concept to my parents to ask for financial help to unlock the essential Content Management System (CMS) and additional static pages. However, the reality was daunting; after completing the design, I would still have to ask for an even larger sum to fund yearly web hosting. With no independent income during the lockdown, this was my only option. Yet, as an introvert navigating severe mental exhaustion, I simply lacked the emotional capacity to articulate a complex internet-based business model and ask for help.
The Breaking Point • Walking Away from the First Editor
Beyond the immediate financial barriers, deep research into the platform's long-term structure only added to my confusion. I was willing to sacrifice to fund the initial design stage, but the platform's strict scaling limitations loomed over me. Looking at their pricing tiers, I realized a high-traffic media and blogging site would rapidly trigger heavy expenses, including a restrictive 10,000 CMS item limit. I reasoned that as Klineduo scaled to fit our community's evolving needs, customizing the site on this specific platform would eventually become a financial catastrophe. Ultimately, on one definitive afternoon, overwhelmed by the impossible math of it all, I closed the editor and vowed never to return. It was my final moment using that website builder, leaving months of unreleased design work completely behind.
The Crucible of Social Media • Developing a Tough Skin
Defeated by the web development process, I retreated back to our native Instagram page, but the old fire was missing. I began posting features erratically. Watching our hard-earned likes, reach, and follower counts steadily plummet felt devastating, and the temptation to give up completely was stronger than ever. Yet, looking back, this painful algorithm crash became a hidden blessing. Navigating those daunting, low numbers forced me to grow a tough skin. It completely broke my dependency on surface-level validation and permanently reshaped my view of social media metrics. I learned that a community's true value isn't measured by a fluctuating engagement algorithm, but by the real human connection behind the art—a vital lesson that prepared me for the true breakthrough that lay just ahead.
