Overcoming Cost Barriers, Seeking Contributors, and Future Objectives

2019 – 2020 • The Architecture of Klineduo

Designing, Re-evaluating, and Planning for Scale

Finding the right platform took time, but after experimenting with several options, one finally caught my attention. It possessed the exact tools required to bring my vision to life. I created an account and immediately dove into their learning resources, teaching myself the fundamentals of digital design. Stepping into the world of web design and development for the very first time was a whirlwind experience—a beautiful mixture of euphoria and natural uneasiness. Seeing my ideas take shape visually provided an incredible wave of motivation. For a founder who once felt limited by a screen, building this digital space felt like a dream finally coming true.

Four months later, taking advantage of the momentum and the digital foundation I had built, I officially began searching for global contributors. My goal was to create a designated feature portal called "Know Your Artist," dedicated to telling the deeper human stories behind the lens. I composed and sent waves of personalized emails to creatives we had previously celebrated on Instagram, inviting them to be the founding faces of the upcoming Klineduo.com website. Then came the ultimate test of patience. Weeks went by with complete silence. Then months. Sending your vision out into the world and receiving no response is an incredibly daunting experience, but it became a vital chapter in learning how to persevere for the sake of our community.

The Outreach Metrics • Navigating the Silence and the Breakthrough

To understand the early architecture of our community, I began tracking our outreach data, which revealed the immense patience required to build a global network from scratch. Out of all the initial emails sent to artists, 30% met with complete silence (Emails Not Replied). Another 10% engaged in conversation but didn't submit, while 5% warmly pledged to submit but were caught up in their own busy creative lives.

The true turning point lay within the 15% of creators who replied with completed submissions. This small but vital group became the founding pillars of our platform, though their responses arrived on their own creative timelines. While a passionate 4% responded immediately within the first two weeks, the vast majority required immense time and space; 3% arrived after three weeks of silence, and a staggering 8% did not finalize their submissions until a full month later. This data taught me an invaluable lesson: building an empathetic community cannot be rushed.

A pie chart with an expanded breakdown slice detailing the metrics of "Contacting Contributors." The main pie chart represents 100% of emails and is divided into five slices: 40% Emails Sent (light blue), 30% Emails Not Replied (gray), 15% Emails Replied with Submissions (brown), 10% Emails Replied (orange), and 5% Pledged to Submit (yellow). The 15% slice representing "Emails Replied (With Submissions)" expands into a secondary pie chart detailing response times, which consists of three slices: 8% Correspondence after 1 Month (dark blue), 4% Correspondence within 1–2 Weeks (medium blue), and 3% Correspondence after 3 Weeks (green).

2020 • The Silence broken & The First Breakthrough

Lacking initial replies, my mind was consumed by anxious questions: Did the artists dislike the concept? Were they simply waiting to see a finished product? Did my emails get swallowed by spam filters, or did they just not believe in Klineduo?  But as destiny would have it, a breakthrough arrived. One unforgettable afternoon, I received our very first official submission, followed rapidly by three more in the days that followed. I hadn't felt a true sigh of relief in a very long time. Those submissions felt like a warm pat on the back—a powerful, positive sign from the universe telling me to keep pushing forward.

The Platform Barrier • Designing Through a Global Pandemic

With newfound hope, I began designing the homepage and a static Terms of Service page. However, I quickly hit an invisible wall that could only be dismantled with capital. The website builder’s free tier capped my static pages and strictly locked the Content Management System (CMS) behind an expensive subscription. For a beginner with no income, paying just to build the site—let alone the separate, high fees to actually host and launch it—felt completely overwhelming. This financial strain collided directly with 2020, the year the world was confined indoors by a global pandemic. Isolated at home with little to no movement, fear and self-doubt crept back in. I originally intended to monetize Klineduo immediately through paid collaborations and advertisements to cover these exact platform costs, but raising that sum of money during a global crisis was simply impossible.

The Paradigm Shift • From Profit to Pure Purpose

Trapped under these constraints, I realized I couldn’t control my circumstances, but I could control how I responded to them. I sought out motivation by reading the history of established brands, reminding myself that I wasn't the first person to face a trial like this; creators across the African continent were fighting even bigger battles. During those long hours indoors, my frustration blossomed into a profound shift in perspective. I asked myself: If a Starter fee is this unaffordable and stressful for me, what about an emerging creative trying to kickstart their photography career? If Klineduo charges pay-for-feature fees, would it just feel like a predatory rip-off of their hard-earned money? That single realization changed everything. I stopped viewing Klineduo as a commercial tool and committed to keeping it an earned, accessible, and barrier-free sanctuary for artists.

The Advertising Revelation • Privacy Over Intrusive Marketing

Discovering the Power of Brand Partnerships

The journey into understanding monetization began in 2019. While researching how to connect with corporations looking to advertise, I discovered BrandBassador. It felt like a true blessing. Through their platform, I was honored to run advertisements, reposts, and story promotions for several renowned global brands. This hands-on experience allowed me to successfully generate brand awareness, drive engagement, and create social buzz for companies, earning product gifts, coupons, and commissions in return. It was a vital masterclass in the commercial side of the digital world. [Brandbassador rebranded its platform to Club (Club[dot]co).]

A Pivot in Ambition: Protecting the User Experience

However, as my understanding of digital media matured, I realized I had to fundamentally restructure my financial ambitions. Even though I initially held high hopes for traditional paid collaborations and intrusive ads, my perspective shifted. I decided to transition Klineduo’s future monetization roadmap toward a combination of Affiliate Marketing Programs for curated creative tools, Community Donations, and a highly specialized, non-intrusive Native Ads System.

Why We Reject Tracking Ads

The decision to build a custom, native ad system stems from a deep respect for our community’s digital space. Imagine scrolling through your Klineduo feed, looking for artistic inspiration, only to be instantly hit by an aggressive advertisement for something you recently searched on the web. It feels invasive—as if you are constantly being followed across the internet. While digital marketing is undeniably powerful—and many of the products I personally use today were discovered through ads—we believe tracking cookies ruin the artistic experience. By keeping any future advertisements strictly native and relevant to photography, we ensure Klineduo remains a sanctuary for inspiration, not tracking.

The Digital Expansion

The Web Transition: Overcoming Cost Barriers, Seeking Contributors, and Future Objectives. Faced with the unpredictable nature of social media algorithms, I turned my focus toward the open web. This era became a masterclass in trial, error, and deep strategic planning. I spent months researching and discovering powerful web tools, leading to the design of the very first version of the Klineduo website. However, the crushing reality of high platform subscription costs meant this initial version was never launched.
